What is MCC PAWS @ UCC?

My Canine Companion Promoting Academic Wellbeing & Support (PAWS) @ UCC.

My Canine Companion (MCC) have launched a new programme called Promoting Academic Wellbeing Supports (PAWS) in collaboration with University College Cork (UCC). This programme builds on upon MCC School Programme, that currently, involves 40 dogs in primary and post primary schools nationwide.

MCC PAWS @ UCC is a 3 year pilot project (2023-2026) funded by the University Mental Health Group at UCC and will see the introduction of MCC canines on campus for students and staff. The aim of PAWS @ UCC is to enhance the overall wellbeing of UCC students and staff, with regular dog-based activities being held on campus to foster a sense of belonging and promote social connections.

MCC PAWS @ UCC aligns with the UCC’s strategic goal of committing to support ‘student success, health and wellbeing, informed by the student voice.’ As first year students prepare to commence their third level studies at UCC, MCC PAWS @ UCC will help students buffer the transition and ease the return to university life.

Mission

“MCC PAWS @ UCC is committed to supporting student learning, health and wellbeing through the presence of My Canine Companion dogs.”

Expected goals of PAWS

  • Enhance Campus Experience: Introducing therapy dogs creates a positive and joyful atmosphere, benefiting both students and staff at University College Cork.

  • Promote Wellbeing and Belonging: Therapy dogs boost student wellbeing and foster a sense of belonging, enhancing their university journey.

  • Offer Volunteer and Social Opportunities: Students and staff can engage as volunteers, fostering a close community centered around the welfare of these furry friends.

  • Raise Awareness of Dog Benefits: The program increases awareness of dogs' positive impact on mental health and stress reduction in a university setting

What is the 3 year plan?

In the first year (2023-2024), MCC PAWS @ UCC will host various engaging events for students and staff, starting with the orientation week for new students. Activities like Doggy Photo Booths, Curl Spa, Woof Walks, and Yappy Hour will offer opportunities to relax with My Canine Companion dogs.

As project lead, the School of Nursing and Midwifery is collaborating with multiple college services and departments to create a lasting and effective program. Over years 1 and 2, the team will gather data to shape PAWS @ UCC's design. We welcome input from students and staff to enhance the program's effectiveness.

MCC will train selected staff and students as skilled handlers, empowering them to lead PAWS @ UCC. These handlers will organize events in collaboration with clubs, societies, and services.

Additionally, a digital badge/micro-credential learning resource will be developed for dog handlers.

In year 3, MCC PAWS @ UCC will be evaluated, and a blueprint for a sustainable animal-assisted wellbeing program in Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) will be published.
